Why is red vermilion applied to Hanuman


Mars is the commander of the gods! He is fierce by nature. In ancient religious texts, red is considered a symbol of Rajoguna. Rajoguna is the center of power. Rajoguna results in movement. This is why Shakti worshippers wear red clothing during various rituals. Sindoor is made from lead, an important source of power.

Hanuman is the embodiment of physical, mental, and spiritual strength. That is why his idol is coated with vermilion. According to a legend, once Hanuman saw Mother Sita applying vermilion to her forehead and asked the reason for doing so, Janaki replied, "Son, firstly, it is for the long life of Shri Ram, and secondly, Shri Ram is pleased to see it, because applying vermilion signifies that Shri Ram is my everything."

According to the story, Hanuman then pondered for a long time and then made a decision.  The next day, when Hanuman entered Shri Ram's court, he had his entire body smeared with vermilion. Seeing Hanuman in this form, the entire royal court was astonished. Everyone was aware of Hanuman's intelligence. Mother Sita, seated on the throne with Shri Ram, was smiling. She understood Hanuman's trick. Shri Ram glanced at Sita. Sita became serious. When Hanuman expressed his thoughts upon Shri Ram's question, Shri Ram was overwhelmed.

By doing this, Hanuman once again expressed his devotion at Shri Ram's feet. A devotee should worship God like a pious wife who is completely devoted to her husband – despite being powerful, she becomes helpless before him out of love.
