Why worship deities and the guru at the same time

The primary purpose of worship is to attain salvation by destroying worldly consciousness. The process of destroying worldly consciousness occurs in two ways. In the first process, worldly consciousness is destroyed, leading to intense detachment, while in the second, attachment to worldly affairs is gradually destroyed, leading to the destruction of worldly consciousness. Once worldly consciousness is destroyed by either of these two processes, there is no longer any sense of household life. Although the first process yields quick results, it often results in regret instead of detachment, and the practitioner's mental balance is at risk of being disturbed. There is a possibility. But this deception does not exist in the second process. That is why all seekers resort to the second process of transmutation for worship. It is only in the second process that worship is inherent. In this process, on one hand, worship of the Guru in the form of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, who are transcendental to Satva, Rajas, Tamas, and the three gunas, begins, while on the other, worship of the Goddess, who embodies the family dharma and family ethics, is simultaneously performed.

This entire world is a play of Brahma and Maya. Therefore, on one hand, the web of Maya shrinks, while on the other, the path to realizing God in the form of Brahma begins. Worshiping the Guru increases religious ego, while on the other, worldly wisdom is destroyed by the Guru's grace. The first is detrimental to spirituality, while the second is harmful to worldly affairs. Conversely, worshiping only the Goddess increases religious ego, while on the other, it strengthens the desire for worldly life.

Both of these are detrimental to spirituality.  Therefore, by increasing the unity of Guru and God, worship Guru and Goddess. Those devotees who read the stotra of Goddess before reading Guru Charitra daily, get the fruits of Guru worship very quickly. Similarly, by reading the stotra mantras mentioned in the texts like 'Devi Bhagavat' and 'Chandi Saptashati' and reciting Guru Charitra, the problems within the world get destroyed, ego starts diminishing and one attains the ultimate truth. That is why before reading 'Saptashati', it has been said that Guru Devatasmayakya Vibhaajya.
